The "Charleroi Pride Award" is given monthly by the Design Committee of TEAM Charleroi. Individuals, Organization or Businesses may be nominated for any efforts related to beautification, clean up or physical improvements to areas in the Charleroi. My Girls Korner Kitchen honored The Design Committee of TEAM Charleroi has selected My Girls Korner Kitchen as the February recipient of the Charleroi Pride Award for recent improvements made to the establishment. “It was four years ago when I stumbled upon the vacant space that is now My Girls Korner Kitchen,” stated owner Sherry Adams. “At first glance it was just an empty space, but to me it was the start of something I always dreamed of.”
With a little hard work and a few coats of paint, that empty space was transformed into a friendly, homey place where friends and loved ones gather to enjoy all of the tasty family secrets that Sherry learned from her mother. Sherry commented, “Since opening our doors I strive to provide our customers with a delicious meal every visit. It has been my pleasure sharing this exciting journey with the residents of Charleroi. I would just like to thank everyone for all of the support and allowing this dream to become a reality. Without all of you, this would not be possible.”

CASD students recognized
National Honor Society students and Student Council members from Charleroi Area High School were selected by TEAM Charleroi as winners of the November “Charleroi Pride Award”. In October, this group kicked off a “clean sweep” of downtown Charleroi in preparation for the local breast cancer walk.
Approximately 20 students from the National Honor Society, Mrs. Mineweaser, Mrs. Mary Wilson, National Honor Society Sponsors, Ms. Piecknick, Student Council Advisor, Mr. Vitori, High School Principal, Mr. Shields, Assistant High School Principal and District Superintendent Dr. Brad Ferko, stepped up in a big way to demonstrate their “Charleroi Pride” as well as their commitment to making a difference in the community. The group started in the center of town a fanned out in all directions picking up trash, pulling weeds and doing general clean up. “We have great kids,” stated Dr. Ferko. “Our hope is that others will join in and make this a monthly community effort. One of the easiest changes to make in Charleroi is to keep things clean, but everyone needs to get on board. It is going to take a coordinated effort from the borough, council, citizens and property owners in order to get the job done.” B.L.U.R. receives October “Charleroi Pride Award” Youth from the Gatekeepers Community Church, B.L.U.R (Breathing Life for Ultimate Restoration) were selected by TEAM Charleroi as winners of the October “Charleroi Pride Award”. In August this youth group began work on the first of many, community clean up projects by pulling weeds and clearing debris from the planter at the entrance to Charleroi. This enthusiastic team was back to work in September painting benches at the community park. When asked about these teens Pastor Gregg Anders stated, “The group feels that we do not have to accept the way things are now. They can make a difference and will continue to reach out and support the community in whatever ways they can.” October’s project is already on the calendar with B.L.U.R. planning clean up around the Honor Roll in Charleroi to get it ready for the annual Veteran’s Day Services. Local teens in grades 6 – 12 interested in taking part in these and other youth activities should contact the Gatekeeper Community Church at 724-483-4988 for additional information. Charleroi Garden Club and Shade Tree Commission wins September "Charleroi Pride" award
TEAM Charleroi presented the members of the Charleroi Garden Club and Shade Tree Commission the “Charleroi Pride Award” for the month of September.
The beautiful planters throughout Charleroi are an example of the commitment and perseverance of the members of these organizations. Club members not only plant the flowers in the spring, but weed, water and maintain the plantings through the entire summer growing season.
The Shade Tree Commission is funded by the borough to monitor the trees and flowers planted throughout town. The Charleroi Garden Club is a charitable volunteer organization whose members share interest in gardening, civic beautification, floral design, and conservation of natural resources. Members participate in joint monthly educational meetings in addition to involvement in a variety of community service projects. Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month at the Charleroi Fire Hall. The club is always in search of new members. Other members of the staff include his wife and office manager, Joyce, their son Chad, who is attending the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science and will continue the funeral home’s “lifetime of commitment” well into the future, and former owner A.M. ‘Marguerite’ Melenyzer.

Tom Gillece, Sr. owner of the Corner Plaza acquired his first building at the age of 18. Mr. Gillece has an excellent working relationship with the Borough of Charleroi and Team Charleroi. While real estate is not his primary business, it certainly is not evident. Gillece devotes a lot of time, effort and money into the success of his real estate business.

Colonial, located at 539 Fallowfield Avenue has been in business in Charleroi for more than 50 years. Owners, Marty Kerr and Don Hrutkay were both previously employed by Mon Valley Hospital and worked part time in crafting and floral design. In early 2008 the duo joined forces and relocated the shop to its present location. The company slogan, “Let our special touch be your special touch” says it all. Owners Vincente and Cecelia Valdez opened this establishment in 2008 at the former Pizza Hut location.Vincente Valdez learned cooking from his grandmother, a woman well known throughout her region for her cooking. She passed on some of her secret recipes to her grandson. Vincente proudly recreates these authentic Mexican recipes for patrons at La Fiesta. Stop in and sample Grandma Valdez’s legacy. It was acquired as a support facility to complement Lee Supply’s 10 acre pipe yard.
